Let me put it another way. I want extreme power, server class power. But I don't want to pay more than a thousand clams.
This is what I'm thinking I want in a year or so:
A 2.0ghz Athlon/Clawhammer, whatever be its name, running Hyper Transport probably with 400MHz DDR that has recently been announced. Sporting 32/64 bit capability. The Equivalent rating I've heard of is a 3400MHz Athlon Thunderbird.
I will get an integrated graphics solutions perhaps from Nvidia? SIS could provide it too, and there are some others.
I will show off my 10,000 RPM IDE drive 30+ megs, cheap but fast), I'll spend $150 here and get what I can.
Now I've got my $10 dollar USB keyboard, $30 dollar optical mouse which I can't do without. Speakers, any other accessories such as webcam, printer, I can scrap from somewhere else or do without. Or hope I can.
The monitor? She's got to be a 17-incher. Not the best, more like one of the cheapest, at $150 bucks.
The CD-rom, DVD, (hi speed of course), case, floppy drive and my mid quality speaker card/speakers, well, I'll spend around $150 here, I know I can find it all that cheap and assemble in house.
Now unless I've missed anything - and I probably have, software, no warranty, modem, and the like - this leaves only the processor/motherboard combo and RAM to boot.
How much do you want to bet I can get those for $500 or less in a years time?
That brings my total bill of materials (BOM) to:
$500 +
$150 +
$150 +
$ 30 +
$ 10 +
$150 +
Which adds up to $990.
Ok now I realise there is tax, delivery and the like, but give or take a dollar or two more this is what I expect to spend.
So I can get a server class computer, Hyper Transport, DDR 400/DDR II for around a thousand clams.
How do you like that chowder Itanic?
