You call it moving the goal posts -- I call it dynamic e-business
CONSUMER electronics behemoth Samsung whipped out a triple whopper of a new LCD display this weekend at the 2008 International Symposium of the Society for Information Display.
The new 82 inch LCD panel is designed for 120Hz TVs and utilises an LED backlight for improved contrast and nicer colours all round, hitting 150 per cent NTSC. To round things off, it supports Ultra Definition with a resolution of a meagre 3840 x 2160 pixels.
Sometime in the future, punters in the EU will be able to use a TV with a resolution as high as that, but just don't wait for Ultra Defnition any time soon. Perhaps Samsung - which has outperformed Sony in more than just one field of business - would be well advised to develop a games console which supports UD. One can always hope.
In other news, Samsung has inked a deal with its rival LG Electronics - both companies have agreed to buy panels from each other.
Samsung will buy 37-inch LCDs from LG Display, whereas LG Display promises to stock up on 52 inch panels manufactured by Samsung.
The move is designed to alleviate the bottlenecks both companies are experiencing thanks to ever-increasing demand, whilst at the same time kicking their Taiwanese competitors shins in a somewhat vindictive and hurtful way.
Both LG and Samsung have had to buy panels made in Taiwan to meet demand, and the cooperation will aid them in keeping their market shares safe. ยต
