AMD dual processors to be available on launch day

Four, eight way first, then the rest. Then Toledo
Friday, 8 April 2005, 09:48
APRIL 21ST remains the day AMD has selected to pull the launch of its dual core Opteron processors out of the hat, intended by the chip company to show it is still very much in the running.

Informants tell me that the speeds of processors dubbed the 865, the 870 and the 875 will be 1.8GHz, 2GHz, and 2.2GHz. They also expect AMD to announce Opterons using its familiar number scheme for two way and uniprocessor systems.

That would mean that we're likely to see a similar range for the 2X and the 1X numbering series.

But we expect the 865, 870 and 875 processors, aimed at four way and eight way systems to be available in some quantities on launch date. The dual and single server systems are likely to be available a little later.

And that suggests that AMD is pushing its Opteron family of dual core chips out of the door before it starts to offer the "Toledo" desktop dual core processors in quantity. µ
