Alienware starts recycling: meet AlienExchange

Old lamps for new
Tuesday, 23 October 2007, 11:30

GREEN IS FASHIONABLE these days. Now Alienware is launching a programme called AlienExchange. This allows customers to trade their old computers and other electronic devices for discounts for new Alienware equipment.

Yes, this does mean that you can trade your old VCR for a Hangar 18 machine, it is all the matter of how much discount you can get. The trade is not limited to one-for-one only, but rather is a way for Alienware to start recycling a ton of old electronic equipment. If you want to trade in your old Alienware machine you'll get a 200 dollar discount. Quite a good offering if you own an older lappy or similar non-upgradeable machine.

It seems to us that the role of Alienware inside Dell has been defined, and this role is a pioneer of different programs before they're ready for mainstream line-up from Dell itself.

not so good

I have a few old <1Ghz AMD systems laying around that still work, but aren't really useful for anything other than as a linux print server or firewall. Since I already have those covered, I popped in their specs in the AlienExchange to see what kind of trade in estimate I could get.

Nadda. Zip. Zilch. Nothing.

So trading in those old "paper wieghts", as Alienware's spin puts it, won't get you anything. Actually you'll end up having to pay for the recycling cost.

I put in my Linux laptop (an old Dell knock-off PIII-866Mhz system with a Wi-fi PCMCIA card) and the estimate they gave me was $21.32. If i took off the Wi-fi card and the OS (Ubuntu Linux for the time being) the estimate dropped to $13.94.

I'll pass on the exchange and just stick the old beige boxes in a closet for now. Never know when I'll need a firewall or print server... ;)

Cheers,
John

It's not gramatically correct

Wht do you mean by: old lamps for new? I'm not a perfect English speaker, but this means that if I send a new "lamp" you'll give me an old "lamp". Am I right? I think that the corect writing is: A "new lamp for the old one". If you want to spoof Alladin, then say it right :)
Bye...

Cheap gits

$238.35 for a machine that can be built for £900 today, they must be joking?
