ATI ACE Catalyst drivers 40MB plus

Thanks to .NET frameworks
Tue Aug 17 2004, 15:10
WE HAVE JUST LEARNED that ATI drivers are going to be much bigger that we expected and will put even more pressure on dial up users.

We wrote about this driver here, and gave you some general facts about it.

But then weren't aware that this driver is going to be significantly bigger then any previous one. Even regular 4.8 catalyst are 26MB. Just a few revisions earlier, even 20MB was too big for drivers.

The ACE driver is almost 40MB, so a hefty download. And there is one other thing that you will have to download in order to make this driver work. You need .NET framework, an additional 23MB to prior driver download. So at least for the first use this driver was almost 65 MB download. Yes we have it and will let you know what we think of it in action.

One benefit of Microsoft's .NET framework is that it will allow you to easily create plug-in extensions, if you can. The other thing is that Longhorn is based on the .NET framework. Do you think that we should start caring now about an OS that may come two years from now if we are lucky? ATI sure thinks we should.

If all goes well we will let you know soon what we think about the drivers. Let me just restart and hope my machine boots again.

If you use a modem you can get .NET Frameworks here as it will take you a while to get it and the 40MB driver comes around the second of September. ยต
