AMD cocks a hoop over Intel Euro raids

'Stick it to 'em,' says 'shafted' competitor
Tuesday, 12 July 2005, 20:23
AMD WAS IN in such a tizz over the fact that Eurosniffers descended on Intel facilities at dawn this morning - apparently looking for evidence of underhand practices - that it released a statement.

In it, Thomas M. McCoy a legal veep at the smaller of the two chipmakers proclaimed the raids "should come as good news to consumers across Europe,"

He alleged: "Every computer user has a strong interest in ensuring that the full truth about Intel's anti-competitive abuses is revealed and corrected."

The European Commission raids, he gloated, "show that Intel cannot and should not escape the scrutiny of antitrust officials around the world - nor can Intel escape the consequences of its anti-competitive actions, which raise prices, threaten innovation and harm consumers."

AMD claims Intel, "unlawfully maintained its monopoly in the x86 microprocessor market by engaging in worldwide coercion of customers from dealing with AMD". It is sueing.

Dr. Mr McCoy reckoned today's raids by European Commision would yield "even more insight into Intel's antitrust violations."

Intel says it always obeys the law, especially those which pertain to the territories in which it operates. It'll bend them if it can, but that is obviously what clever, successful companies should do in the pursuit of Dollars. µ
