Typhoon 2 blows through San Francisco

IDF Supercomputer on wheels
Thursday, 28 September 2006, 00:26
REMEMBER THE Tyan Typhoon supercomputer in a box on wheels? Well, this time they are showing off a prototype of the Typhoon 2, and it is bigger, badder and far less pretty.

Tyan-typhoon-2

This one is different in two major ways. It has five boards for a total of 10 sockets instead of the four on the Typhoon 1. Each of the silver chassis has two vertical boards, and there is one horizontal one on top. The horizontal node is the controller for HPC and clustering apps, and the four vertical boards are slaves.

The other main difference is the Typhoon 2 can support quad cores bringing this box to a total of 40 cores. This is really cores on wheels, someone needs to paint racing stripes on one. In any case, the product is not launched yet, there is a little polishing still to be done. Expect it officially in a month or two, definitely before the end of the year. ยต
