THE AUSTRALIAN Broadcasting Authority (ABA) is proving a toothless watchdog in the fight against obscene or dangerous web content.

According to the Australian Daily Telegraph, the federal government's watchdog was powerless against offshore operators and that just four Australian-based sites were ordered off the web last year.

This means that child pornography, pedophilia, bestiality, sexual violence and terrorism instructions were sailing into Oz without any problems at all.

The T complained that the ABA had no power to deal with the offensive sites that were coming from offshore locations outside Australia's jurisdiction. Although it received 1008 public complaints about the internet it could only issue four take-down notices.

This was because just over half all content found to be prohibited came from the US, 22 per cent came from Russia and only four per cent came from Australian-based internet service providers. µ
