New man expects to oust Sarin

Colao promised top Vodafone job
Sun Sep 10 2006, 14:56
NEW VODAFONE hiring, Vittorio Colao, was virtually promised the post of CEO before he agreed to rejoin the beleaguered mobile network operator, the Mail on Sunday alleges.

The paper quotes a 'senior source' as saying that new chairman, Sir John Bond, has promised him the job within twelve months - "barring a major shock."

A Vodafone spokesperson officially denied the story.

The newspaper claims it revealed as long ago as January [2006] that Colao was set to rejoin his former employer. Mr Colao has been given the key job of sorting out Vodafone's European operations, after its former hit man - Bill Morrow - decided to jump a sinking ship and return to the USA for 'family reasons'.

So it looks like Arun Sarin - who 15 per cent of Vodafone's shareholders didn't back for re-election is very definitely in a tight spot. He needs to pull a rabbit out of a hat and restore the company's fortunes.

The INQ feels that 3G may well provide the answer. Nobody initially bought into the digital telephony technology - ISDN. What was ISDN promoted as supplying? Answer: Videocalling.

What is 3G being promoted for? Answer: Videocalling. What did people actually use ISDN for? Answer: Internet access and network backup. Funnily enough, 3G - thanks to HSDPA - can now supply both Internet access and network backup.

It's obvious, really. µ
