UK businesses ban messaging

Tough on messaging, tough on the causes of messaging
Wednesday, 16 July 2008, 13:35

BLIGHTY BASED businesses think that instant messaging systems are the spawn of the devil and nearly three-quarters have nipped them in the bud.

According to a 'we do not need the publicity really' study by Instant Messaging supplier ProcessOne, firms are not so worried about time wasting, or setting up inter-office romances, so much as security concerns.

Instead the study said that Windows Live Messenger, Yahoo Messenger and other IM services, had been banned by more than half of managers fearing the loss of sensitive business information.

However the study pointed out that this argument was absolutely pants given only 12 per cent of those surveyed said that their company kept an audit trail of IM messages sent by employees using free public IM software. So users could have downloaded ICQ or another web-based system and be merrily selling the company down the river if they wanted.

More than 74 per cent thought messaging could be useful to their organisation but were too scared to implement it. µ

Messaging could be the best for the business after all...

One of the greatest things in a company I worked before was the fact you could use yahoo messenger and communicate to the outside world. The funny thing is, that it in fact was a security company.

One of the benifits was that I could talk to former colleagues in other companies and could get problems resolved a lot faster than with for instance emails or opening official tickets - obviously those colleagues used tunnels and stuff to break out which made the hole thing far more dangerous than simply allowing it. Experts often know experts in other companies and you should give them an easy way to get in touch with them otherwise they might find a way to do so anyway and it might create a greater threat than the messaging itself!

Not Surprising

I am constantly amazed by people who work in "technology" who have very little conception of what is possible. We all have middle managers who decree "thou shalt not IM" or any other prohibited activity.

All I can say is if the average Iranian or Chinese user can find a way around their system blocks or decrees, what do you think the experts can do. And an expert would be almost anyone with a little knowledge of these systems.

Most people managing IT are completely clueless about what is going on.

And I like it that way....
