SONY IS SET to release its first range of HD Radio gear in July.

HD Radio allows stations to deliver extra music content on up to four side channels that piggyback on the frequency it already uses.

According to the Sydney Morning Herald, there are 1,200 radio stations in the US have adopted the technology, but Sony has only just joined in making gear for them.

Sony's senior product marketing manager said that digital terrestrial radio was "the final frontier in audio", which will be news to the shockwaves from the Big Bang which are still travelling through space. The first kit the company will issue is the XDR-S3HD, a $200 tabletop AM/FM/HD radio, and the XT-100HD, a $100 tuner module for vehicles that will work with most Sony car stereo units.
