AMD pins its hopes on China

Economic crisis be damned
Monday, 29 September 2008, 12:10

AMD ISN’T TOO WORRIED about the global economic crisis or slowdown in tech spending, as long as the company manages to penetrate the Chinese market, according to Randy Allen.

Talking to journalists on his recent trip to China, AMD’s senior veep of computing solutions said he actually saw the economic unrest as an opportunity for his firm to expand, taking advantage of the fact that PC vendors were now turning more towards products with higher cost performance.

"I think that represents a tremendous opportunity for us", said Allen, who went on to note the importance of winning big in strategic markets to protect company revenues in the current economic storm. "For AMD to be successful, we have to win in China," he noted, like many a senior veep, from many a company before him.

AMD is even sucking up to the Middle Kingdom in naming its products, apparently, with its first 45-nanometer processor dubbed "Shanghai" supposedly coming out next quarter.

The firm also just changed its tagline from "Smarter choice" to "The future is fusion". Perhaps they mean Asian Fusion cuisine? µ

That's okay...

That's okay, my (new to me) FX-62 seems to be a bit of a dog (cost me "only" $100, GROAN!!!). When I get tired of its hot, sluggish performance I guess I'll be replacing it with i7.
China.. you can have AMD!

China? Really?

I have to say, as an American who's been laid off in this economic crisis, reading this article hasn't exactly made me want to buy AMD for my next upgrade.
