IBM primes supercomputers to cure cancer

System clusters widened
Wednesday, 8 November 2006, 17:34
IBM HAS ANNOUNCED a new range wotsits and thingymabobs for their System Cluster 1350 today.

This latest range is capable of scaling up to 1024 nodes with a line up of next generation processor systems and blades, as well as high speed connectivity and coprocessor acceleration, making it a primary choice for big wigs like financial services, industrial, petroleum and life sciences.

IBM Cluster Solutions directory, Wendy McGee says that these clusters can help tackle the challenges of high performance computing environments and will be less complex to manage as well.

Biopharmaceutical company Telik has bent it's System Cluster 1350 to the task of curing cancer and research drug development and has apparently experienced a 5x imporvment in processing power.

Indiana University have recently switched on their new IBM cluster, which can perform a staggering 20.4 trillion numerical operations per second. This massive powerhouse of computing is going to support discoveries in life sciences, astronomy and probably mainly be used to host the students Quake servers.

All that's left now is for them to become self aware and take over world. ยต
