New version of Joomla arrives

Dancing away from Mambo
Wednesday, 7 June 2006, 10:57
LEADING open-source content management system, Joomla, has been upgraded to version 1.0.9.

Featuring 12 security and over 160 general bug fixes it is expected to be the last maintenance release before the overhauled Joomla 1.5 appears.

Joomla's project director, Andrew Eddie, told the INQ that he expects Beta 1 of Joomla 1.5 to come out near the end of this month. He said that the release of the stable build would coincide with the August Linux World expo.

According to the current roadmap Joomla 1.5 will feature an overhaul of the framework, improved caching, an FTP filesystem layer, user plugins and many other enhancements.

Joomla is the main open sauce rival to Mambo, the result of a spat when members of the core team abandoned Mambo to work on Joomla.

Eddie said those users wanting to try Joomla shouldn't wait for 1.5. They can set up 1.0.9 now and then migrate to 1.5 when it comes out.

He added: "The architecture (of 1.5) is like chalk and cheese compared to this (1.0.9) version of Joomla or any version of Mambo past or in development". He went on to say that his team is on track to solve, "many scalability and flexibility issues that have prevented Joomla from entering the enterprise market."

Eddie already has his sights set on version 2.0, by which time the software should work properly. The development team's efforts, would reach "full fruition with version 2.0," he said.

Eddie said that version 2.0 would be a complete rewrite of the code without "a high degree of backward compatibility," while 1.5 is a "major refactory but with a high degree of backward compatibility in mind." ยต
