Linux users can monopolise Wi-Fi airspace

But tool for ISPs will prevent truffling
Wednesday, 9 June 2004, 11:43
A REPORT in the New Scientist suggests that features available in the Linux operating system could mean users can snatch extra bandwidth from wireless networks.

According to the report, changing just a few characters of software code allows Linux users to dominate the wireless air waves.

The reason for this is because the MAC protocol in newer access cards is run in software and not in hardware, circumventing the way wi-fi users are allocated bandwidth.

But some boffins have come up with software intended for wireless service providers which will stop the wi-fi access being truffled up by savvy Linux users.

You can find the full report, here. ยต
