AMD’S RUBBISH PLANS for a $54 million sewer treatment plant have been given the go ahead by the mafia, er, Saratoga County state comptroller.
Thomas DiNapoli, the State Comptroller for Saratoga County gave his stamp of approval to the project late on Wednesday, noting that "The expanded [sewer] district will help ensure Saratoga County has capacity for AMD and beyond". The statement by Don DiNapoli pretty much seals the deal, with the only step left being the blessing of the Saratoga County Board of Supervisors on June 17th . Then its Badabing, badaboom.
AMD wants to build a shiny new $3.2 billion chip fab in Halfmoon, on the banks of the Hudson River, and the expansion of the sewage plant was deemed necessary to siphon off all of that excess chip fat into the already murky waters.
The expanded sewer will apparently be able to deal with about three million gallons of AMD gunk a day, and will create about 1,465 jobs. The company has also managed to swing itself a sweet deal, whereby it is allowed to keep $1.2 billion in state incentives and tax credits, which were used as bait to lure the firm.
Another member of the Saragota county familia, James DiPasquale, executive director of sewer district 1, noted that the project would double the waste treatment capacity at Saratoga County's current sewer plant, and confirmed, " the timing was coordinated to accommodate [AMD's] moving in." He was heard muttering under his breath, “its not personal, it’s strictly business".
We wonder what happens to the excess gunk capacity when the firm decides to for fabless. µ

The mafia is more honest and forthright.
I adore this author's style. But that's "go" rather than "for" is it not?
I thought the firms new goal was to not have assets, now they are building ever crapper assets that they are trying to flog. AMD needs to reevaluate there business model!!
On what basis do you quote 1465 jobs?

Is this during construction, or while the plant is operating?
Tom DiNapoli is the comptroller for New York state, the whole state, not just Saratoga county. It is an elected position, voted on state-wide.

Don't know Jimmy DiPasquale. Lots of Italian-Americans up here though, and Dutch-Americans, too.

And I doubt the expanded treatment plant will need an extra 1,465 jobs. Maybe one or two more, but the facility is fairly well automated.

Even if AMD goes fabless, if the fab gets built and operated by someone else, you'd still need the capacity.

If the fab doesn't get built (my bet), well, there's more room then for the gunk flowing from Albany, the (unfortunately nearby) state crapital.

You Brits are peed-off just because Saratoga is where the colonials whipped ole Gentleman Johnny Burgoyne and his army back in 1775 or thereabouts, ending any chance for the British Army to split New England off from the rest of the colonies and collapse the rebellion.
he is actually the comptroller for the entire state and over see's the retirement system for civil servants, firemen, police, etc. as well.

For the most part, this is a well-written article. However, I do not think the author has access to an Edit button in which to correct that minor mistake. Almost perfect.

If you do a web search on "AMD 1465 jobs", the quote refers to when the plant is operating. A PostStar article dated this February gives further details, "Nearly 900 of those jobs will be operators or technicians... Their salaries could range from the mid-$30,000 level to several hundred thousand dollars."
I don't care how many dago guinea wop greaseball goombahs come out of the woodwork; it looks fab to me.
Saratoga County has been growing steadily for 20+ years.
It is a unique tourist attraction, home of Saratoga Racetrack.
The area also has some very fine Universities, Rensselaer Polytech, to name one.
IBM also has a strong footpath throughout N.Y., they seem to play nice together as far as i can tell.
I wish I had a crystal ball that tell's me what AMD will do. How they will do.
I'm quit fond of the products of they'res that I've used.
Ahh, that's some of why I read article's here.
