Intel Dempsey cores to clock at 3.80GHz

Server Roadmaps
Tuesday, 7 June 2005, 15:15
CHIP FIRM INTEL anticipates that when Dempsey is released in the first quarter of the next year, the Xeon will have a front side bus of 1066MHz and start life at 3.80GHz, with other flavours clocking at 3.60GHz, 3.40GHz and 3.20GHz.

Dempsey, a dual core 65 nanometre Xeon, will have two times 2MB of cache, but Intel will also create an MV Dempsey with TBD less than 105 watts, according to the most recent roadmaps the firm has shown its partners.

During the third quarter of this year, Intel will cut prices on its Xeon range, with the 3.6GHz dropping, for example, from its current $850 to stand at $691. These price cuts presage the introduction of an 800MHz bus 3.8GHz 2MB cache Xeon at $850, prompting the customary domino affect across the range.

There will be no price cuts on the recently announced large cache Xeon MPs this quarter, however.

Intel has now set a price for its E7230 Mukilteo chipset which is expected to be about $50 at launch. Its other server chipset prices stay stable during this quarter. ยต
