INQUIRER wins Charity PC race

Consumer Electronics Show 2006 $10,000 for a good cause
Friday, 6 January 2006, 18:58
EVERY YEAR Tiger Direct and AMD, along with a host of others, sponsor the Charity PC Race. It goes like this, you get a bunch of journalists in a room who say they know about computers. Then you have them prove it.

Talk is of course cheap, look at how much you pay for the INQ, and we do talk a lot. In fact, probably too much, we do tend to go on and on about nothing in general. For days and days it seems, without a point and a purpose. Wouldn't it be annoying if you had to read writing of the calibre of most conversations where people talk and talk?

OK, bad jokes aside, you get 30 or so journalists in a room and have them build the very PCs that they write about all day. Add in alcohol, high carb foods, a warm room, and the general lack of sleep that is mandatory at shows, and hilarity ensues. It looks like this, I am just to the right of the frame, don't bother looking to hard.

The-field

The contest is a little on the easy side, the mobo, CPU, heat sink/fan and many cables are already in place. You have to hook up the power, memory, 2 optical drives, and the HD. Then add a wireless NIC, X-Fi card with front panel, and a graphics card. This is me hip deep in HD screws.

Building-the-pc

The short story is last year, Rob Squires won. The year before, I did. This year, we were both competing. Can you sense a little rivalry? Yeah me too. We were also playing for the same charities, mine is Wingspan Life Resources.

So, how did it end? A picture tells a thousand words, so rather than drone on again, you can see for yourself.

Charlie-with-the-check

I would like to thank all the sponsors of this for putting this contest on, it gives a lot of money, and good computers to needy causes. When the site is updated in a few days, go check out the sponsors. Last, we would like to thank the guys from XFX for taking the pictures for me while the race was going on, without them, there would only be me droning on. ยต
