Fujitsu selling flash fab to AMD?

Joint venture crumbling? Nah
Tue Jul 17 2001, 10:52
REPORTS SAID that Fujitsu wants to flog its US flash plant to AMD, after a Japanese daily said that it would close its Oregon factory.

But the implications of the move, if the story in Nihon Keizai is true, could be of greater significance than at first appears.

The joint Fujitsu AMD venture has been a lucrative and successful business for both companies for the last seven years.

AMD brings its semi know how to the design of flash memory, which competes with Intel's flash production, while Fujitsu owns and builds the fabs.

There are two big FASL flash fabs in Japan.

Rumours of the joint venture breaking down over the years have surfaced but never come to anything in the past.

We've placed a call to AMD to attempt to clarify the situation and will update the story when we hear more. µ
