Wed May 22 2002, 12:11
CHIP GIANT INTEL is preparing to drop prices on both Pentium 4s and motherboards on the 26th of May, we can confirm.

European distributors of Intel products say that the cuts will be deepest on the 2.4GHz and 2.2GHz Pentium 4, with drops of well over $150 on each of these parts.

Although Intel may make changes to the prices even at the last minute, distributors have notified their dealers of the guesses they're making as to the changes.

Intel now has a bewildering range of Pentium 4s, with 400MHz/533MHz flavours and different cache sizes.

This is what system integrators are expecting - we will get confirmation of the changes next week.

533MHz/512K Pentium 4s
2.26GHz - perhaps as much as $170
2.4GHz - over $150 price cut
2.53GHz - price likely to change the same

400MHz/512K Pentium 4s
1.6A - not expected to alter
1.8A - expected to drop over $25
2.0A - expected to drop by $85 or so
2.2GHz - fall of around $175
2.4GHz - drops by over $150

400MHz/256K Pentium 4s

1.7GHz -fall of around $19
1.8GHz - fall of about $31
1.9GHz - fall of about $50
