SOFTWARE GIANT Microsoft has paid prosecutors in the Iowa antitrust case huge wodges of cash to go away and leave it alone. It is not clear how much Vole had to pay, but given that it cost Microsoft more than $60 million in legal fees, we suspect we are talking a lot of dosh.

The plaintiffs in the case allege that they were overcharged for VoleWare for years owing to Microsoft's monopoly of the market.

Most of the cash will be spent helping Iowa Schools while average consumers will probably end up with a few bucks or a coupon for a free operating system upgrade.
