Tue Feb 27 2007, 13:28
CHIP FIRM Via said it is cooperating with IT group Geekcorps to help bring telecoms to poverty stricken African country Mali.

Mali has a population of 12 million people with an annual average income of $1,200 and with 64 per cent below the poverty line.

Via, with the aid of Geekcorps, will help install "Cybertigis" which are mobile computing kiosks consisting of a PC-1 PHD appliance linked to a Nokia 770 mobile phone, LCD monitor, printer, scanner and camera - all of which run off car batteries.

A system has been set up at Bourem Inaly near Timbuktu which as well as using car batteries also employs solar panels. µ
