Perlmutter claims Israel is Intel's growth engine

Big Dadi's having some
Tuesday, 1 July 2008, 18:37

INTEL MOBILITY Group boss, David (Dadi) Perlmutter, told the INQ that the opening of fab 28 meant a great deal to him personally and made him very proud of Intel Israel’s achievements.

“Hi tech is the driving engine of the Israeli economy,” said Perlmutter, who added wryly, while we sweated earlier today under a boiling sun, “the Israeli economy is booming to such an extent that one could almost imagine we live in Switzerland and not Israel”.

Where-you-gonna-stick-those-

Perlmutter, 55, who holds a BSc in electrical engineering from Haifa’s prestigious Technion technology institute, first made a name for himself in the firm by developing Intel's platform approach to laptop technology with Centrino. A quickly rising star in the company, having previously been head of Intel’s Development Centre in Haifa, Perlmutter is pegged by some as being in the running to become Intel’s next CEO.

“Intel Israel is not just the growth engine of Israel, it is the growth engine of Intel worldwide,” he said.

Talking to the INQ at the opening ceremony of Intel’s new Fab 28, at Kiryat Gat, Perlmutter admitted that the weakness of the US dollar is putting something of a strain on Intel’s business in Israel, hiking prices up on everything from fuel to manpower.

However, he said he hoped for the situation to improve and noted he was confident the company would ride it out.

Asked when he thought Israel could expect Wimax deployment, Perlmutter muttered, “I hope soon”. Pressed by the INQ for a more specific timeframe, Perlmutter conceded to say he hoped it would happen within the next couple of years, if not sooner.

The-mutterer--this-morning

He remained tight-lipped about future Intel Israel projects, but did say there were quite a number in the pipeline.

When asked whether it bothered him that a new R&D facility in Saudi Arabia was touted as the, 'first Intel R&D in the Middle East', Perlmutter noted that Intel was a politics-free zone. He added that there were those who considered Israel more a part of Europe than the Middle East, but when asked his feelings on the matter Perlmutter affirmed, “I do consider Israel to be part of the Middle East”.

Perlmutter told the INQ he had, in fact, met several of his Intel Saudi colleagues, but then with a sad smile added, “but obviously not in Saudi Arabia”.

Perlmutter said he was proud of the fact Intel employed both Arabs and Israelis, and added that it would be nice if the harmonious relationships between Intel employees could carry over to the real world outside. µ

Good Article Bad Perlmutter.

Good article as said but how could perlmutter claim Intel Israel is the engine of Intel worldwide? I mean Intel has at least 9 different research labs. Don't get me wrong Israel is Very very advanced but not The top as is claimed in this case.

Not the top?

Israeli engineers are the ones who saved Intel's ass with the Core architecture.

Israel R&D

The Centrino mobile platform was invented and developed in Israel's design centers, as long as the Banias, Dothan, Yonah, Merom, Conroe, and Woodcrest, all very successful and appreciated processors.

It is the Israeli developments that saved Intel from the Pentium 4 fiasco.

Forgetting history

Don't forget that the Core architecture is actually just a derivative of the Pentium Pro/II/III faimly...which was primarily created and developed in Hillsboro, Oregon, USA.

The Israeli engineers took it to the next step, but they didn't create it.

Intel conundrum

I'd like to have seen the Desktop Group's faces when Centrino started receiving rave reviews... priceless...

The Desktop Group at the time had a massive budget and the development lab in Israel was considered completely marginal by Intel bosses. It operated on a tiny budget compared to the huge Desktop Group...

How many people were working on Centrino? 100? How many in the Desktop Group...? 1000, 2000?

It just goes to prove that:

a) Pentium III kicked serious ass and all it needed was a die-shrink + some power management features to remain viable.

b) Pentium 4 should never have seen the light of day. They should've considered it merely a "research path". Learning curve if you may.

c) you can do a lot with a little ingenuity.

btw: "politics-free" I think refers to the fact the Israeli government will bend over backwards to attract investment. In a bull-headed fashion, businesses continue to ignore the whole Palestine-Israel issue.

Compare Yonah and Prescott

Core 2 is based on Yonah/Centrino which was a real good platform however compare it with the previous architecture and in reality it was a sum of various tweaks that added up along with many optimizations. Therefore like i said their very very advanced but not the top. Israel's not the sole talent of Intel. Intel's talent lies within its reach and various markets and the culmination of various techniques and technologies derived from its many R&D centers.
