OVER AT web site A Shareware Life, there's a report about a company being hauled over the coals by a lawyer
claiming a patent on card game Solitaire is being breached.
According to the site, implementations of Solitaire on computers infringes the "Goldberg Patents", in particular claim 18 of one particular US patent, 6,264, 560.
This particular patent, which you can see here, is actually a patent for playing games on a network and a number of games are mentioned, including blackjack, poker, craps, roulette and baccarat.
Computer Solitaire, says the lawyer, breaches three patents, with the earliest one filed in 1996.
The shareware author points out that other companies have also received such a letter, but he is determined to fight the case. He wants the patent invalidated, and wants a lawyer to help bust this particular patent.
Here for more.
We wonder if the lawyer has put quill pen to parchment and asked Microsoft to cough up for its implementation of Solitaire, which first appeared in Windows in the early 1990s? µ
