Samsung pushes GDDR4 graphics memory

Power savings claim
Wednesday, 5 July 2006, 16:28
MIGHTY KOREAN chaebol Samsung said it has started mass producing GDDR4 memory aimed at the graphics market.

Marketing man Gerd Schauss said the quality of DVD movies would improve because of the memory - that's the graphics quality, not the content.

Samsung reckons that GDDR4 reduces power consumption while increasing performance. Measured against GDDR at the highest speed of 2Gb/s, GDDR4 showed 45 per cent power savings, claimed the firm.

Both ATI and Nvidia hailed the move. Samsung quoted cool-looking analyst Jon Peddie as saying the non integrated graphics market will be worth over $4 billion by the end of 2008. µ
