New Intel mobos on allocation

CHIPZILLA HAS NOW CONFIRMED price cuts on its existing family of PIII-based Celeron chips.

The 1.30GHz/256 drops 12 per cent to $74, the 1.20GHz/256 drops 13 per cent to $69, and the 1.10A/256 by seven per cent to $64, it confirmed today.

The 1GHz/256 Celeron stays unchanged at $64.

This is in preparation for an onslaught later this week, when it will release a 1.8GHz/128K "Celeron" based on the Pentium 4 design and with a 400MHz front side bus at around $106 or so, while the 1.7GHz Celeron of the new variety enters the fray at a modest $85. If system integrators get the usual Intel rebate, that knocks another $2 off these prices.

The new "Celerons" use 478 pins and have 128K cache, and so require different motherboards.

However, all is not rosy on the Intel motherboard front - we learn from a Euro distributor that the D845GLLY, the D845GLAD, the D850EMV2, the D845EBG2, the D845GBV, the D850EMD2, the D845EPT2 and the D845GRG are all in very short supply in May.

The first two of these mobos are 400MHz front side bus babies, the rest are 533MHz boards.

Intel has already placed all of these new mobos on allocation - and good supplies are not expected until the middle of the end of June in Europe, we now know.

That will give third party players a chance to sneak in under the Intel allocation radar, if they're ready enough themselves. µ
