LG Electronics will not recall laptop batteries

They don't explode normally
Wednesday, 13 February 2008, 08:18

LG says it will not recall any of its laptop batteries after an independent investigation has confirmed that they do not normally explode.

The Korea Electrotechnology Research Institute, a government backed testing outfit, investigated the strange case of an exploding battery which was reported in January.

The battery, installed in an LG laptop, was made by LG affiliate LG Chem.

However boffins at the Institute say that the explosion was caused by external factors. It looked like the laptop had been walloped under an extremely high temperature.

Under normal conditions it is impossible for the laptop battery to explode, the boffins said.

However no one has worked out what might have caused the high temperature.

LG Chem said that it will not recall the type of batteries used in the notebook computers made by LG Electronics.
