Square Enix after Space Invader developer

Expanding the market
Tue Aug 23 2005, 18:59
TRADITIONALLY KNOWN FOR its RPGs, particularly the Final Fantasy series, on the PlayStation it would seem that Square Enix is really trying to expand its horizons to ensure that it continues making money into the future.

After announcing that it will develop for more next-gen platforms than simply the PlayStation 3 the company is now making a reported 67 billion yen ($610 million) bid to take over Japanese arcade game maker Taito Corp.

The offer is at a 12% premium on Taito's close on the stock market when the offer was made and will be open until September 21st. A large shareholder in Taito, Kyocera, is to sell its 36% share in the company to Square in the coming days.

Square hopes that by buying the people behind Space Invaders it will be able to bring itself to compete with the likes of Nintendo in Japan and around the world.
