Apple's already used AMD chips

Return of the G5: HyperTransport, AMD-8000 chipset
Fri Sep 22 2006, 07:32
TWO DAYS back, Hector Ruiz, technology advisor to the President George W. Bush, and also well known as the CEO of Chimpzilla, held a speech at a certain dinner in San Francisco - as we reported here.

While Hector was keen on pointing out that Apple will not be held hostage to Intel and that the Fruitzilla will also put AMD products inside their aluminium cases, almost everybody at the dinner didn't consider the fact that Apple has already bought and shipped millions of AMD's chips in their fruity products. Not CPUs, though.

Yes, that's right - we aren't living in a Steve Jobs reality distortion zone and we pretty much remember the Power G5 machines. If you remember, IBMs PowerPC 970 processor actually uses AMD technology inside, most notably Open Sauced HyperTransport front side bus and AMD-8131 part of the AMD-8000 chipset - sometimes referred as chipset from a company that says that they don't produce chipsets. AMD-8131 is actually a PCI-X loves HyperTransport chip, and the specs can be found on HyperTransport Consortium and IBM websites.

Apple using AMD technology and chips? Old news. ยต
