THE UNITED NATIONS has set aside Monday as its International Day of Persons with Disabilities and is calling for improved accessibility to the Internet, mobile phones and other information technologies.

UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan is backing a convention that was drawn up by members of the international disability movement entirely on the Interweb.

The Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities was written up using the net, email, and mobile phones, Annan said. The convention will probably be adopted when someone works out what l8tr frd means.

Annan said many people with disabilities encounter numerous obstacles on the Internet, particularly due to websites that do not provide options for persons who are blind, visually impaired, and those who cannot use a mouse to navigate the web. µ
