Market not ready for HD DVD, Blu-ray

Blue laser drives will take three to five years to ramp
Wed Jun 20 2007, 15:02
IDC ISSUED a report saying DVD burners will carry on being the number one optical product until 2011 while HD and Blu-Ray need to do more for widespread take up.

The firm said that blue lasers DVDs could take between three to five years before they reach mass market. And, said Wolfgang Schlichting, research director for removable storage at IDC: "HD DVD needs to aggressively push volumes to neutralise BD's advantage in support from consumer electronics and content companies."

Until those things happen, PC market growth will give CD/DVD drives a good future while HD DVD needs to widen the price advantage over Blu-ray drives. µ
