IBM snatches Broadcom from TSMC

Strategic Fishkill Factor
Wed May 21 2003, 11:49
BIG BLUE appears to have won the foundry business for big US firm Broadcom from local manufacturer TSMC.

A report in today's Economic News claims that IBM Micro will make BRCM's chips using a copper 130 nanometer fabrication process.

Just 10 days ago, Via said it had resisted attempts by IBM Microelectronics to win its business. But other companies that have been wooed away from the big Taiwanese foundries include Nvidia and AMD.

IBM is aggressively targeting TSMC and UMC customers because it's got a huge megabillion fab which otherwise would sit there doing not very much.

It is using clever sales techniques to woo the business away from the Taiwanese foundries.

These techniques are called, by sales people, undercutting its competitors on prices. ยต
