IBM Power PC 1GHz chip only runs properly at 933MHz

Overclocking? It's a bug
Thu Aug 05 2004, 15:20
A BUG IN THE 1GHz Power PC 750GX means that some instructions won't run at that clock frequency.

And the work around is that instead people should run the 1GHz chip at 933MHz.

While the chip will run at 1GHz, it doesn't support all the instructions in the processor, making it a superb example of overclocking.

So is the maximum frequency of the PowerPC 750GX 933MHz and not 1GHz? That seems to be the case right now.

IBM picked up an award from the publishers of the Microprocessor Report for the 750FX at 1GHz, but we wonder whether the gong will now be re-cast for the 933MHz speed?
