GAME PUBLISHER UBISOFT is suing its disk manufacturing partner for millions of dollars over the leaking of the PC version of crusading action game Assassin's Creed.
The title, which sold just 40,000 copies to PC gamers, was reportedly downloaded more than 700,000 times after an employee of the duplication house, Optical Experts, allegedly liberated a copy of the game's code and posted it on the internet.
Ubisoft maintains that the OEM ignored strict security guidelines written into its manufacturing contract. The company tracked the first posting of the code to an unnamed Optical Experts employee and a copy of the game was later found in his home.
Ubisoft are also claiming that a bug – which was deliberately placed in the code prior to release for security reasons, and which caused pirated copies of the game to crash – lead to negative reviews of the game which further eroded sales and damaged the company's reputation.

Its a crap game anyway, wouldn't even recommend wasting th bandwidth to download the copy.
for every customer with an ISP, as an option to add on to their internet account. Then ubisoft get guarenteed money coming in every month, and the people who want to play games can just tick the "ubisoft £2" option on their ISP singup page.

UBIsoft have to compete with other gaming companies and provide games that people want. Stick a minimum contract period, have new games with a slightly increased monthly premium, older ones on the lower tariff etc.

Does that sound like a good idea? Is that workable?
Good for Ubi, i hope they win the case...i would do the same, and any other would.

BTW Assassin's Creed its a pretty fun game, well, my brother loves it :)

i went out and brought R6V2 and even after patches is still buggy, what a waste of money that was don't even play it cause it done my head in with the shut downs and the game lagging, and that's on SP and it ain't my pc, E7200@3.6GHz, 4GB ram and 8800GT

well done ubi nearly as rubbish as EA...not quite but close :)
they made a poor console port of a very poor game. they should be happy to sell one copy of this garbage.
delibratly put a bug in a game? what a morons, they need to sue themselves for ruining the reputation of a game
Personally I'm betting this is another fine example of the entertainment industry trying to blame it's problems on piracy while over inflating it's damages. I mean lets look at the PC version for a second:

1. Given it comes many months after the hyped has died down most people that wanted it either already have it for a console or probably played it at their friends house.

2. It's a style of game that appeals more to console gamers then PC gamers in the first place.

and

3. Ubisoft did basically nothing to advertise the PC version.

Is anyone really all that surprised the PC versions sales weren't fantastically amazing?

Also given the game was released in APRIL is anyone all that surprised that it's July sales wouldn't exactly be that good? I mean come on, there are 10-20 PC games released a month and they expect people to still be interested in buying a 4 month old game when they have to choose between it and atleast 10 brand new games thats more suited to a PC gamers style? For that matter the console versions weren't selling much more then that worldwide after 3 months themselves, around 75-80% of the consoles versions total sales were in the first 10 weeks and they had less competition.

Anyway lets see the worldwide numbers from April, May and June then lets decide weither or not Ubisoft is making a fair arguement or just bitching because no one wants their game anymore, well no one wants to pay for it. Also if they can prove it was downloaded this many times because of a "tagged" version that got leaked why aren't they going after the people that downloaded it, I mean honestly they couldn't collect enough info with a bugged product to figure out who they are?

Oh and shqtth demo's are a fine idea except for these days most developers don't release them til 6-8 months after the game launches if they ever do. Proof of point there never has been a single public demo for Assassin's Creed, not on PS3, not on 360 and definately not on PC.
I found I can buy a complete SCPH77001 PS2 system with a dozen titles on eBay for like $75.
Sure, it's been a couple years since they were new, on the other hand I took all the savings & bought a 55" 1080p LCD monitor to play them on.
I defy anybody at ubisoft to sue me!

... and I'll pick up a copy of Assassin's creed for $5 from Value Village when I'm done with what I've got. Gloat.
I download assassins creed for PC. AMAZING GAME

HILARIOUS Ubisoft first uses reloadeds no cd crack

I am still wondering why they didnt go back to starforce game protection

After spending days to get to the "end" of the game, you're taken into a room and told "we'll be back shortly" (or similar) and the other characters walk out.

Then you're left there to wander around and try and figure out what to do next.

But... there is NO next. Apparently they intend the game to have sequel(s).

Which, obviously it would be fucking stupid to buy, as they'll just do it *again* to try and get people to buy "the next one".

Mind you, you can't skip the cut scenes and "learning stages", so even trying to re-play the game doesn't work, it's just pathetic. :(

For what could have been *so* well done, they royally screwed it. Not recommended.
Yeah right, this is to put you off downloading the free version.

Finalised software in manufacturing volumes with a deliberate bug, I don't think so...

...Unless that deliberate bug was the DX10.1 --> DX10 downgrade to make Nvidia run properly... after the greens gazumped the game sponsorship deal with the reds.... and the greens don't do DX10.1 do they?
Its a console port and everyone knows the game is too repetitive, better off waiting for the price to drop before buying it.

Lets blame pirates for bad PC sales, lets not look at how many people on a console and a PC.

They went by how many times a torrent file was downloaded but that doesn't mean a person downloaded the whole game.

What we're going to learn is that the gaming industry IE ubi is going to take this clown to court, he's going to face a charge for all the copies ever distributed because of course there aren't going to be any other hackers/distributors of the game out there. Nope, not a single one, and why should they speak up? He's going to be taking one for the team.

YOYO, You're On Your Own
Was DX10.1 also a bug? :D
Off course! They patched that one, didn't they?
I liked Ubisoft in the older days, now it's just too buge(?).
And don't pirate those game that show you in full screen that:("The Way)
It's Meant To Be Paid"
Ah, so that is how Ubisoft makes sure that everybody must download a 1.01 patch, which in turn makes sure that the punter has the original install CD.

I have been wondering for quite some time how 1.00 releases from game houses manage to have those nasty bugs which make a game hang up or not play at all after a certain level.

Very nice of Ubisoft to tell us that they willfully sabotage their products, for which they expect the public to pay money.
Why release it on DVD first??? If 700,000 are will to download it then give them a option to pay to get it off fast servers.

I love getting games off steam. Its quicker than driving and after you read a review buy it straight away.

And if people want the media give them an option to get it sent to their homes as a backup.

I just wish companies would just think how can I get this to most amount of people with the least amount of effort.
The makers of Crysis should read this. They were all over us end users for stealing their game. I admit 700k is allot of downloads and believe we should buy it legit instead. But when you have inside jobs like this it is like putting a piece of beef in front of a dog and expecting it not to bite.
I knew some of this crap had to be inside jobs, sad, real sad. What people will do to get something for free.
Regulas
It didn't sell because its a terrible game. the bugged version had nothing to do with reviews, it really wasn't that good after the first 5 minuets of pretty scenery and wall running.
Why would you ship a buggy piece of software to an OEM manufacturing your disks if you don't intend to have them duplicate it? And why the heck do you place a bug in the game and later claim it hurt your reputation. I mean it serves you right if you do - why didn't you just replace the textures with text saying "this is a pirated pre-release" or something like that.

Anyway, most people probably downloaded it as they could get it faster and I would think most of the people who downloaded it either bought it or wouldn't have bought it in the first place.
So I guess the review sites must be reviewing the pirated game?

What ever happened to trying out the demo first.
You've made a small error. Reread this section of the article from Gamespot & then please correct the mistake:

"According to the industry-tracking NPD Group, the PC edition of the game sold more than 40,000 copies at US retailers through June."

Note the figure is not a total, worldwide sales figure but a very specific monthly and geographically isolated one.
So this employee took a copy of the game that was for manufacturing that was actually a pre-release version with "a deliberate bug" in it for security reasons? This "deliberately bugged" game then goes on to cause negative reviews and this is the fault of the copying of the "deliberately bugged" game? Does anyone else smell the male cow crap here?
