LINUX BASED notebooks which will be sold at $100 each will be made by Taiwanese manufacturer Quanta, the Taiwan Economic News said.

The machines, promoted in the One Laptop Per Child (OLPC) scheme is the brainchild of Nicholas Negreponte at Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). Some scepticism has been expressed that the bill of materials would preclude the $100 price tag.

But according to the Economic News, a quantity of Linux based notebooks made by Quanta will be shipped before the end of 2005 and distributed to Nigeria, Argentina, China, Brazil and India.

Other sponsors include Google, Red Hat, Nortel, AMD and News Corp. µ
