German hackers threaten Merkel's digits

Some day my prints will come
Tue Apr 01 2008, 08:20

A GROUP of German hackers has threatened to publish Chancellor Angela Merkel's fingerprints.

The move is part of a campaign against the German government's plan to stick biometric data in new passports.

The Chaos Computer Club (CCC) has already published Interior Minister Wolfgang Schaeuble's fingerprints in its magazine.

Those prints were taken from a water glass he used at a public debate and the plan is to use similar samples from other public figures, including Merkel, who support the increased use of biometric data.

Apparently lots of people are coming forward with specimens of famous figure's grubby paw prints.

The CCC says fingerprints are a poor choice for identification documents because they are easy to collect, and reproduce.

Bad metrics

Let's not forget that not only are most biometrics pretty easy to steal, but unlike a compromised password -- very difficult to just change. New fingerprints or retinas anyone?

Anyone who seriously considers biometrics for anything real obviously is an utter idiot who has never studied what always happens in any real world security system. One wonders how they write well enough to present the proposals...

Authorities in several countries raided Megaupload recently, shut down all of its services, seized hundreds of servers and arrested several of its executives on criminal charges.

Do you think the move was justified?
