AMD issues profit warning

Price wars kick in. Or not
Friday, 7 July 2006, 10:15
CHIP FIRM AMD said sales for its second quarter would be around $1.21 billion, a decline of nine per cent compared to its financial first quarter.

It had previously said it expected sales to be "flat to slightly down" but claimed that the figures represented a 52 per cent rise on the second quarter of its financial 2005.

Nevertheless, AMD said that it will show record figures for its Opteron servers for the period, which it will announce on July 20th.

Intel will announce its quarterly financial figures on the 19th of July, but has stopped giving mid-term warnings.

So far it's unclear whether Intel's move to shift its old inventory has had much of an effect on AMD sales. The world+dog is not particularly interested in buying CPUs in the second quarter anyway. Intel has had to slash prices on products in order to introduce its future gen microprocessors such as Mr Cointreau, Monsignor Woodcrest Xeon, and notebook wunderkid Merom. µ
