The anti-spyware tool, which will be incorporated into the new Vista operating system, has made certain members of the security industry go an interesting shade of puce when ever it is mentioned.
They claim that Vole has not given them sufficient access to Windows Vista to build a product to compete with Defender. Symantec and McAfee claim that they are being shut out of Vista 64-bit by a kernel-level security feature in the OS called PatchGuard.
The final release of Defender fixed 400 bugs which were found in the beta 2 of the product by the 34 million people who downloaded it.
Defender is still free and available in English although German, Japanese and other languages will follow. It is also a key part of Vole's antivirus product, Windows OneCare, which Vole is flogging for $50 a year.
