New Macbooks will sport Nvidia GPUs

Two in some cases
Tuesday, 14 October 2008, 11:28

JUST A FEW HOURS to go before Apple announces its new line-up of Macbooks, and the rumour mill continues to grind at full pace.

But among the wishful thinking and plain lunacy, there often appear a few threads of truth.

The folks over at Daring Fireball, who we begrudgingly admit have been spot on in the past with these things, are making a number of bold, but believable predictions.

The most interesting of which is that all of the new line-up Appie Lappies, the Macbook, the Pro and the Air, will, indeed, feature Nvidia graphics chips.

"All these new MacBooks ship with the new Nvidia 9400M GPU. It’s apparently a screamer performance-wise, especially compared to the Intel integrated graphic chipsets that shipped with previous MacBooks and MacBook Airs, and it is capable of driving the 30-inch Cinema Display as an external monitor", promises Daring Fireball's John Gruber.

He goes on to mention that the new Macbook Pro will contain a second NV GPU, the 9600M GT, which seems to be squarley aimed at taking advantage of the forthcoming Snow Leopard OSX, which will use redundant GPU processing power by offloading general computing tasks away from the main CPU.

We'll have to wait and see if it all comes true, and the INQ will bring you the truth, the whole truth, and nothing but the truth as soon as Saint Steve shares his secrets.

We’ll know soon enough. µ

Well, it's not like...

ATi will ever get back into Intel. Way to eliminate choice guys. Keep up the good work.
It seems to me that customers should be able to decide.
Who wouldn't want an HD3300?

two nvidia gpus?

I suppose the main advantage of two nvidia GPUs is that when one inevitably fails, you can use the other if thats hwo its been designed.

Also I suppose choice doesn't really come into it with MACs because if you really wanted choice, you wouldn't buy a MAC...

:-P
