Elpida shifts to 90 nano DDR2 memory

No trivial task
Wed Dec 01 2004, 08:35
JAPANESE MEMORY maker Elpida said it has started producing DDR2 memory chips using a 90 nanometre manufacturing process.

It will release 512Mbit and 1Gigabit SDRAM chips using the smaller process next year.

The firm acknowledged that moving to 90 nanometre process is not a simple matter. But Yukio Sakamoto, president of Elpida, said that his firm has verified the technology and created high production yields.

The firm has managed to move to the 90 nano process by introducing silicidation, which decreases problems caused by additional resistance, which has an effect on performance.

Elpida will be able to create DDR2 SDRAM with speeds of 667Mbps, 800Mbps and higher, it claimed. ยต
