25 watts is the good old days now - Bob Colwell, former Intel chief architect
I suspected something like this when I saw the original G5s. Interesting definition of "scalable architecture" there, those guys have. It's obvious this CPU is a lame duck and that the PowerPC architects need to go back to the drawing board. Which is a shame really; the ageing PC needs a decent rival, but this clearly ain't it.
I also wonder if they used an AMD Athlon 64 FX-optimised version of Photoshop on the Aurora. If not, it's hardly an apples to apples comparison.
It would be interesting to find a *NIX app that could be run on both OS X and the new G5s, and the 64-bit version of Linux for AMD's 64-bit CPUs. Any chance of a "Best UNIX clone platform" article?

Broadband in India
Hi,
I live in mumbai city. I've read that article abt broadband in argentina by fernando cassia and, well, the situation is not too different over here. The people who provide "broadband" to me and a lot of other people in this city go by the name "pacenet"...u can check out their website www.pacenet-india.com, if u check under internet->schemes, u'll see that the maximum advertised bandwith is only 128kbps-that too limited usage. Chatter's camp - 26kbps (i think, give or take a kb or two) Rs. 550 a month Surfers surprise - 40 kbps (that's what i have) Rs. 750 a month. Downloaderâs Delite - 64 kbps costs 1500 rupees a month. By the way, 1 US dollar = 45 rupees.
You do the math on that and then you'll know why i'm sending u this email.
The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (trai, www.trai.gov.in) recently released their "Recommendations on Accelerating Growth of Internet and Broadband Penetration", you will find it on their website.
Thanks

Private detectives get nasty Intel letter
Oh yeah, I can see why Intel is attacking these raincoated flatfeet. Their web site is soooo much like Intel's. Violet is just another shade of blue after all.
And that logo in the upper left that says "seven" over an eye, well there's an "n" in Intel also. I'd say that there's red-handed proof of plagiarism. Also, they use "7i" to qualify their (bad excuse for an unlawful) company in many places on their page, and everyone knows that "i" is a letter that BELONGS to Intel.
Finally, the home page of these crooks has a pic of their headquarters with window panes that look like just like the ones on the pic of the saintly Santa Clara firm (which is not on the home page, but in the About page, but THEY STILL LOOK THE SAME).
Really, your Honor, these crooks have all the trademark signs of just wanting to surf on another company's hard-earned reputation. Its tar and feather time again !

Whole AMD Sempr0n family on way
Unreliable sources have told me that AMD is planning an entire Sempron family. The first one was the Barton. We'll also see the Homeron, Margeon, Lison, and Maggyon in the next couple of years...
Read F

AMD and Monty Python
It is my belief that the AMD Sempron is an amusing, knowing parody of the Monty Python "Dirty Chemist" sketch (see link). I hope the Sempron is quickly included in AMD's list of processor brands not to be used again!
Here.
Best wishes,

Adam,
I think someone should register the domain name "ITheSelfAppointed GodOfNaming DoHerebyDeclareIntelligence IntelAndTheLetterI ToBeTrademarksOf TheIntelCorporationSo ThatTheyMayBeEndowedWithSpecialPowers InTheCrusade AgainstPoorTeenagersAndFun.com"
or if that doesn't work, this will do, "www.intelligentintel.com"

Massed Strings of Sempr0ni
Certainly the Sempron is a "dumb name"--and it's meant to be. It's based on the (misspelled) name of the least of the "Three" Stooges. The Shempron will be followed by the higher end Curlyon, Larryon and Moeron.

Indonesia and Broadband
Dear Mike,
I want to flame your article.
AFAIK, Indonesia has the most EXPENSIVE cable/ADSL in the world. The cable with bandwith: 1. 64kbps *SHARED* with
lots of computer cost Rp. 500,000 (US$ 60). an average speed is around 0.7kbps on 07.00 - 17.00 (work-hour), and around
15kbps on 22.00 - 5.00.
2. 64kbps *Un-shared* around US$400. Real performance around 40kbps - 60kbps
3. 128kbps *Un-shared* around US$800. Real performance around 80kbps - 120kbps.
4. For ADSL is 250MB for US$40 (x2), and each additional MB cost US$0.18 (x2). And user need to pay twice. For
ISP & telecom. So, for ADSL if I pay 250MB US$50 to ISP, I also must pay another US$50 to telecom. Speed around
64kbps - 80kbps.
5. Unlimited ADSL with speed around 200kbps. for US$ 550 (x2). So the real price is US$ 1100. (US$ 550 payable to
ISP, and US$ 550 payable to telecom)
If there were a good ISP that not from Indonesia (example: britain, USA, etc) want to make bussiness here, I want to welcome and thanks that ISP.
Here is the biggest ISP in Indonesia: http://www.cbn.net.id

Broadband in Aruba
Hi Mike,
Greeting from the sunny island of Aruba (Dutch Caribbean).
Argentina should be still happy with the prices of ADSL or cable. Down here in Aruba High-Speed Internet is very expensive. Please take a look at the only (up till now) ISP: http://www.setardsl.aw/tariffs.jsp (state owned) and divide all prices by 1.75. 1 US$= Afl 1.75 (Aruban Guilder)
Unlimited 128kb/64 = US$ 79 montly, and you have to pay for a modem around US$100, and installation fee (self install) US$ 72 or (ISP install) US$ 143 .
Unlimited Business: 1024/512 (Don't fall behind :) ) US$ 348 montly, modem varies from US$ 79 up to US$ 257 (wireless b), installation fee (self install) US$ 143 or (ISP install) US$ 286. So here we pay on a yearly basis US$ 4176, comparing to Argetina that is almost twice as expensive.
Also all packages are DYNAMIC IP's that change eveytime you connect or every 4 to 6 hours.
So when I surf around and see prices in Europe, USA and around the world I do really think that there is no place on this planet that High Speed Internet is so expensive that it is in Aruba.
PS: Please do not include my name in your report if you want to write a piece on this one.
