Torrent site encrypts piracy for privacy
THE PIRATE BAY, perhaps the world's most notorious source for internet downloads, has announced that it is going to be implementing SSL and VPN connectivity to private added security and privacy to its users.
Last week, Sweden passed a new telecomms security law, which allows government agencies to oversee all phone and internet traffic. Writing on his blog, Pirate Bay Admin 'Brokep' said that in response to the legislation - which he views as an unwarranted invasion of privacy - the site will be adding SSL in the near future.
SSL (Secure Socket Layer) is generally used to provide secure and encrypted end to end transactions for shopping sites, where credit card information is ecrypted and sent 'on the fly' to prevent third-party snooping.
The effect of adding SSL to The Pirate Bay will be to make surfing and downloading torrents effectively impervious to uninvited monitoring - especially since Pirate Bay's servers are now distributed around 'privacy friendly' countries rather than Sweden, where its server farms were previously raided.
Brokep also says that he plans to band together to get international ISPs to kick Sweden off the internet in a protest. We respectfully suggest that this is rather less likely to happen, despite the uncomfortable precedent the Swedish law sets.
Regardless, it looks like good times are in store for Torrent downloaders. µ

If Sweden gets the boot, so does Finland. Could effect also Norway and Russia.
How will this work for the ISP? Can the ISP see that you go _to_ TPB (if you use their DNS server), but not more than that? How much can the ISP know about you?
If the rest of the world banned Sweden from the internet the worst that can happen is that a big puzzle (or is it furniture?) reseler wont be able to call home from its abroad branches...
So, who cares?

About time! The Pirates are way ahead of the rest. Take a look at your e-mail - most likely not encrypted. Or web sites like Amazon, with most traffic not encrypted, including your shopping list, products you view and search results.

Excuse me but how is it a precedent? doesn't the UK and countless other countries do such snooping already?
So does this mean that they could monitor both incoming and outgoing coms? let hope nothing gets routed that way anymore because if thats the case then how likely is it that they might sell or loan off the data they have seen to other countries
It wouldn't affect Russia because I remember reading that when the Pirate bay servers were raided, it also shut down a Russian news service that was being hosted on Pirate bay servers.

Suicide rates in Sweden are amongst the highest in the world, now that secure and private communications are a thing of the past in Sweden this just adds to list of reasons as to why you want to end it all if you had to live there!

https://torrentprivacy.com/ appears to no longer be up. Maybe the swat team has raided their servers and shut them down... or maybe it was a sting to get everyone's credit card information to track them.
Anyhow im annoyed because i spent $10 for a month the day before it disappeared! Lucky i used a pre paid visa? =p
