SECURITY VENDOR Check Point Software has issued a fix for its Zonealarm personal firewall products that revives Internet connections disabled by a Microsoft security patch released a few days ago.
The patch is applicable for the Zonealarm products Internet Security Suite, Pro, Antivirus, Anti-Spyware and Basic Firewall. It is available for download from Check Point Software's Zonealarm website.
Zonealarm's problem was caused by Microsoft's Tuesday release of Windows security patch KB951748. Microsoft's patch was designed to resolve a widespread Domain Name System (DNS) security vulnerability. It's thought that ZoneAlarm's firewall might have interpreted the Microsoft patch itself as malicious code, causing it to disconnect users' Internet access.
Checkpoint advises that users might have to uninstall the Microsoft patch to restore their Internet connections before they can download the fix to Zonealarm. It also said reducing ZoneAlarm's security level to "medium" might also restore Internet connections even if the Microsoft patch has not been removed. µ

So the glitch is actually caused by ZoneAlarm, not by Microsoft's patch.

It's hardly the first "glitch" of this kind in ZA, too. Ever since their deal with the israeli government, ZoneAlarm has gone downhill, and it's pretty obvious it has more backdoors than Sony's rootkit. All to keep us safe from the terrorists, of course.
Just a heads up: that new Microsoft patch also restored the simultaneous open connection limit in the TCPIP.SYS driver originally included in SP2. If you patched that limit away before, you might want to do it again; I saw a noticeable slowdown in my browsing since that patch. Search for a "TCPIP.SYS patch" and you can find it right away. It's old, but still seems to work fine for that.
