Word of the Day: yarborough - hand of cards none of which is above nine - Ohmigod - I got me a yarborough
MUSIC DOWNLOAD sites have obviously had enough of people not realising how compatible the MP3 format is, which is why seven of them have clubbed together to promote a new logo.
HMV, Woolworths, 7digital, Digitalstores, Tescodigital, Tunetribe, and Play.com have all come together to promote the 'MP3 100 percent Compatible' logo which is aimed at emphasising the fact that MP3 files can be played on most, if not all, current digital players.
You can now be safe in the knowledge that any MP3 files you download fron the INQ are safe and legal. Honest. Look we've got a logo and everything.
These download sites have a little more in mind than educating on MP3 compatibility – the trade body behind this initiative highlighted how this would identify legal download sites to consumers. Of course anyone brazen enough to offer millions of pounds worth of other people's copyrighted music and movies would be in really big trouble if they were daring enough to copy and paste a logo onto a website (like we just did for example).
The logo was devised by the Entertainment Retailers Association to show that MP3 files can be played on PCs and Macs as well as portable music devices.
The digital music industry seems to be doing well this year – October figures from the Official UK Charts Company show that single track downloads were up 41 percent and albums have increased by almost 70 percent compared to last year.
7digital's Ben Drury said that, "The beauty of an MP3 file is that once you have bought it, you don't need to be a computer genius or a lawyer to make it work and you are not locked in to a relationship with a single retailer or hardware manufacturer."
BPI, the British record industry's trade association, is also backing the scheme. Its chief executive Geoff Taylor said, "This logo will not only help give consumers confidence that the music files they are buying will play on a wide range of devices, but will also help them know that they are legal and that artists are getting paid."
If it wasn't so sad it would be hilarious. µ

.. 100% useful.. .. .. ..

.. .. for people who have the base frickin intellect to utilise them.

We should all be glad that people are taught exactly what cars are, and what they do. Otherwise we'd be knee deep in bodyparts of a certain percentage of the population who mistook them for trees.

I love it when industries cater for the stupid folk - it gives me two groups to laugh at!

Shonky.

"If it wasn't so sad it would be hilarious."
It is.
It's a good idea for a logo like this as it lets people know they're downloading music they can use in 10 years time, rather than music that's full of DRM and will only work on a few devices before refusing to pay.

That new fangled DSi from Nintendo doesn't support MP3s.

It supports AAC only.
We need to get rid of the 'wonky N'. The "big N" may as well be zed. We're all Robin Hoods, the legendary Princes of Thieverys! 'Our style is legendary'!
what a load of bull. Ever since drm came out mp3 is no longer compatible.
it shows one thing - the industry is acknowledging that DRM is universally hated.
they have seen an opportunity in non-DRM mp3s and good luck to them.

DRM is attempting to contol the gaming industry but again it is failing miserably. the genuine customers are suffering the woes of DRM and many of them are boycotting certain games or even turning to piracy! in the meantime the pirates continue to pirate unhindered - wheres the sense in that?
