Sun uses AMD chip in co-processor card

Sort of like a bit of a blade in Intel's back
Tuesday, 8 July 2003, 21:03
OUR BETE NOIRE, Sun Microsystems, has started to use Athlon microprocessors as co-processor cards, just like Scott McN's company did in times of yore, with the AMD 386 and the K6-2.

The K6-2 is probably just a piece of past history to you, but we can tell you in those days AMD was so excited about it that it produced a nice little pair of binoculars as a marketing exercise so you could see how the horses limbered up in that desperation derby of yesteryear.

The co-pro card comes with native PC compatibility and "interoperability", uses a Mobile, that is to say notebook, 1.4GHz Athlon XP 1600+ processor, includes 24-bit graphics support, Ethernet, and USB.

We're grateful to AMD Zone for spotting the Sun card, and the Sun page itself can be found here. ยต
