Dreamfall gets episodic

GDC 2007 Longest Journey is indeed a long one
Monday, 5 March 2007, 06:35
FUNCOM, DEVELOPERS OF excellent series of adventure titles "The Longest Journey" announced that it will develop Dreamfall Chapters, which will continue the TLJ series of games while using the "episodic" approach.

The company hid this fact inside a press release that said Funcom received a grant from the Norwegian Film Fund, for research and initial development of Dreamfall Chapters and the online-only delivery of content. The project is now in early pre-production and it is not known when this series of games will hit the market.

It seems that the success of Sam'n'Max was the trigger for other game developers to dive into the episodic delivery of new chapters inside the game. Telltale Games is releasing new episodes of Sam'n'Max like clockwork, and this cannot be said for the pioneers of the concept, Valve Corporation and Ritual Entertainment. For episodic content to succeed, you practically need a monthly release schedule - having a six month-to-one year delay won't give you the audience. ยต
