Hitachi re-jigs hard drive division

To make savings it will lose jobs

A BEAUTIFULLY SPUN press release from Hitachi Global Storage Tech gets to the 13th paragraph before we learn it's laying off 11 per cent of its 40,000 workforce to make savings of $300 million.

It is shutting down its slider manufacturing factory in Guadalajara in the middle of 2008, and closing its media manufacturing operations in Japan by the fourth quarter of 2007.

Its San Jose operation will keep media manufacturing, but this site is a shadow of its former self. Shenzhen in China is really the hub of Hitachi's HDD operations these days, and its importance will increase. µ
