THE TIMES reports that the authorities in Venice are so desperate to prop up the sagging city that it wants rich celebrities to sponsor sites.

And Bill Gates has emerged as the potential hero to help save the Accademia Bridge which is in danger of collapse. The mayor of Venice said that Bill Gates could well have the bridge named after him.

But he appears to be involved in the billionaire equivalent of a Bridge Derby, with other sponsors being Francois Pinault and William Weidner, a US hotelier. Yeah, he's the guy who owns the Venetian in Las Vegas, prompting the mayor of Venice to allege then that he'd breached the city's IP.

Venice is in danger of turning into a place for tourists only - the locals are fleeing the city. µ
