Urbanmax looks like giant Ipod Touch

Updated We're gonna need a bigger pocket
Wednesday, 22 October 2008, 13:09

INTEL HAS SHOWN off what seems to be an oversized Ipod Touch at its Taiwanese developers forum this week.

The touch-a-like, dubbed Urbanmax, is a Chipzilla concept with an 11.1-inch touchscreen running on a small Core 2 Duo processor, the same used in Apple's anorexic Macbook Air.

For users who don’t want to fiddle around trying to type using the touchscreen, UrbanMax has a small slide-out Keyboard and the inflated tablet can also be tilted up when placed on a flat surface, imitating a traditional notebook.

The mutated Ipod doppelganger also apparently comes with an SSD, likely to make it very costly indeed, not to mention the price of its low-power CPU and chipset. Well, if you’re going to copy Apple, copy its pricing model, that obviously seems to be the reasoning here.

Intel reckons its concept would support HD 1080p video playback on its 1366x768 resolution display and probably support wireless internet like Wimax and 3G.

Something very uncool about the trying-so-hard-to-be-hip Urbanmax is that it apparently runs Vista, not known for being particularly brilliant ever, especially not with regards to touch screens.

Also, with so many tiny crotchtop makers now adding touchy feely capability to netbook screens, UrbanMax would need to really deliver the goods to stand a chance. And the question is, will be people really want to schlep around some giant version of an Iphone that won’t even fit in their pockets?

iDont think so. µ

Doesn't...

This thing doesn't look like an iPod Touch - you're blind.

Big Screens are Good

Unless and until projection technology becomes feasible for portable use, I think that the bigger screen you can carry out, the better experience you have. I mean most mobiles today can play back videos but who would want to watch movies on them. I believe that we have not seen a solid competitor to the iPhone because of its comparatively large screen size (regardless of resoltuion). Because when it comes to media, bigger is definitely better!

ugh

Who the heck said they're trying to copy Apple? Anything which has a touchscreen doesn't become an iPhone. And why the heck would they keep the price as $200 for something that offers much better functionality than iPhone?

Who's forcing you to use Vista? It uses an x86 processor (Core 2 duo) unlike iPhone and so it's just like a normal computer-- you can install whatever operating system you like.

Again you're assuming it's meant to compete with iPhone. ugh. Why would you expect to be able to carry a computer in your pocket.

People keep forgetting...

...that there's a huge (and still largely untapped) demand for tablets among artists.

The Microsoft-pushed Tablet PCs remain a bit pricey and a bit hard for "punters" to figure out, while Apple has steadfastly stayed out of the tablet market. This leaves most artists still drooling for Wacom's Cintiq, which is a nice product but costs as much as a laptop and still requires a computer to tether it to.

Now that the Tablet PC push has run its course and most of these touchscreens have abilities on par with Wacom's lower-end products, putting it all in a classy-looking, fairly portable casing should be a no-brainer.

A "regular person" doesn't have much need for such a thing, but a student who might doodle in OpenCanvas or a professional needing to sketch out proposals and so on from the road could use them.

1080p?

"Intel reckons its concept would support HD 1080p video playback on its 1366x768 resolution display"

So how exactly will it squeeze in 1080 vertical pixels on a 768 pixel high display??? Well, apart from the obvious "downscale it to 720p" option.....

Vista Touch

"apparently runs Vista, not known for being particularly brilliant ever, especially not with regards to touch screens"

Your'e kidding right? Vista has one huge redeeming feature and that's its touch support. What a ridiculous 'FUD' like statement to make. NO current OS has better support for touchscreens.

And

I haven't tried Vista speech recognition but I read that it's substantially improved over XP Tablet Edition. It is presumably still processor hungry, though. Meanwhile I use the Fitaly "keyboard" program - I have kind-of RSI. I prefer a contactless-sensed stylus to gesture while clicking with the other hand, but plain touch with an old, carefully washed marker is tolerable - it's an accuracy thing. This looks like just a nice Tablet PC. The catch is the word "concept", which we know to mean usually "never to be manufactured".
