World chip sales in 2004 to hit $199 billion

A billion of anything is quite a lot

ANALYSTS AT HANDELSBANKEN Capital Management have released their estimates for total chip sales in 2004. A report to its clients estimates that wordwide chip sales will hit $199 billion this year.

Next year, the analysts expect growth of 7.8%, meaning sales will be worth $214.5 billion in 2005.

In its report, Handelsbanken says world chip sales for April will be released on Saturday, and it expects those figures to show strong sales, with handset and PC chips particularly bouyant. Consumer electronic semiconductors may be slightly weaker.

Reports yesterday showed that US PC shipments grew in April, with Dell, HP and megadistie Tech Data all showing positive growth. µ
